Shortly after the initial earthquake caused by the Dieselgate scandal had settled down, Volkswagen announced to the entire world its plans for the future. Predictably, they didn't involve diesel engines, but electric cars instead. And lots of them.

We don't remember the exact number, but it was something like 30 new models by 2025. Considering the Germans only had the e-Up and e-Golf to begin with, that was a bold claim from a desperate company, so everybody was a bit skeptical about its chances of coming true.

One year later, and all we've seen so far are just a bunch of concepts. First, it was the I.D. compact hatchback which looks to become the Golf of electric vehicles. Then it was the I.D. Buzz, a modern reincarnation of the Volkswagen Bus that is supposedly going to get built.

Last April, the I.D. Crozz was introduced at the Shanghai Motor Show, previewing the mandatory electric crossover that any manufacturer needs to have within its lines these days. Even though funky in appearance, the Crozz had a pretty sensible powertrain.

It had all-wheel-drive capabilities thanks to multiple electric motors who combined for a total of 306 hp. The battery capacity was not disclosed, but it was said to enable the e-SUV to travel for 311 miles (500 km) on one charge (by NEDC standards, which is still over 200 real world miles). Recharging to 80 percent would take 30 minutes provided a 150 kW fast charger was available.

For this year's Frankfurt show, Volkswagen says it will bring a refreshed version of the I.D. Crozz concept that is closer to the production version of the vehicle. The company has also released a teaser image and a video, and while we can definitely see more of the new Tiguan in its aspect, we fear it's still a little too futuristic.

According to VW's timeline, the I.D. Crozz is supposed to be the company's second electric model of the I.D. range, following the hatchback later on in 2019. The next two are still under wraps, but we do know they are called Lounge and AEROe, with the Buzz van closing the known future of Volkswagen's electric ambitions in 2022.
