Imagine a 1,614-square feet (150 square meters) room where it's always raining. Once you get inside, wherever you go the drops stop, which means you remain dry throughout the artistic experience. Other than the coolness factor, there’s also a highly-developed digital control system behind this creative event, and it’s quite impressive.
Man, now we want to go to China again. Especially that last time we visited the country, we were always busy looking at the cars and concepts on showcase in Shanghai. It was a rather  mouse and cat type of experience, considering there were so many things to observe there and little time to do it. Getting there for a different experience like this would be worth doing.

Until we buy tickets, though, let us look into the details around VW’s little marketing thing. Opened on Saturday evening in Shanghai, the exhibition marks the first display of Rain Room in China. According to Volkswagen, the artwork was created by the British-German artist collective Random International and has already been met with great interest with displays in both London and New York.

What’s even better, apparently, is that this is the first time the exhibition occupies an area of 1,614-square feet (150 square meters) in Shanghai so that it surpasses all previous versions. But what is this thing?

With Rain Room, the artist group Random International has created an installation that combines technology and creative interaction in a unique way. Rain Room is a room in which it is constantly raining. As soon as people move inside the room, however, the rain is interrupted precisely at these points. This makes highly-developed digital control possible which provides an unexpected refuge for the visitor in the middle of the torrential rain.

Further details can be consulted in the adjacent press release. But we can tell you this much, we enjoy seeing art and culture, in general, being backed by carmakers, even if there’s some PR to it too.
