Volkswagen likes to repeat the same formula over and over again, especially with hot hatchbacks. But as fewer people want one of those, the company is branching out into crossovers with the T-Roc R.
Arriving at almost the perfect time, the T-Roc R is the first of its kind from Volkswagen. It was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show and is about to enter the UK market with an asking price of £38,450.
We know that some believe it's too much money, but a Golf R isn't cheap either. Presumably, you can have more fun in the hatchback, though people want crossovers now. But will they go for this one? The problem is SEAT did a fantastic job with the Cupra Ateca launch. Every big YouTuber got to test one and many had nice things to say about it.
Before you undermine the T-Roc R for being just a more expensive version of the SEAT, know that the Cupra costing £36,700. The Audi SQ2 is even cheaper at £36,125. You should also know about options like the £695 adaptive dampers or the overpriced sports exhaust.
There's a variety of colors that include Energetic Orange, Turmeric Yellow, White Silver, Indium Grey, all of which will be ignored in favor of Lapiz Blue and Deep Black.
All three are basically the same thing, MQB-based crossovers powered by a 2-liter turbo making 296 bhp (300 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). They go from 0 to 62 in about 5 seconds and come with DSG gearboxes, adaptive suspension, big brakes and body kits. If you're curious, there's a cool drag race where the SQ2 and Cupra go up against regular hot hatchbacks.
“With the arrival of the R, the T-Roc again demonstrates the impressive versatility of its packaging, with the ability to be a stylish and practical family SUV, a fun-focused Cabriolet or, now, a driver-focussed R sports car,” stated T-Roc product manager at VW UK, Claire Haynes.
