Volkswagen T-Roc Priced in the UK from £20,425, Only Has TSI Engines at Launch

Perhaps as a response to declining diesel sales, Volkswagen launched the new T-Roc crossover only with three TSI turbocharger petrol engines in Britain, ranging in power from 115 to 190 HP.

You might not find this odd, but the Vdub had several launches where only diesel engines were available. The Passat and Tiguan only got the 2.0 TSI a few months ago, delayed 2 and 1 year over the European versions, respectively.

To be more specific, the base engine for the T-Roc is a 1.0-liter TSI three-cylinder producing 115 HP (113 bhp) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque. Volkswagen claims it's capable of 55.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 117g/km.

The base SE is also available with the 1.5 TSI Evo, rated at 150 HP (148 bhp) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). This would be our comfort-pick of the range. However, there's a powerhouse called the 2.0 TSI too. It's available on the T-Roc SEL with standard 4Motion and a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The price - £31,485 - is unreasonably high unless you really like this funky VW crossover.

Two diesel engines have been announced but not officially priced, the 1.6 TDI only in FWD form and the 150 HP version of the 2.0-liter that's available with both DSG and 4Motion. In December, UK buyers will also be able to get the 1.5 TSI with the 7-speed automatic.

The T-Roc is bigger than some of its competitors and about as practical as a Golf. It measures 4,234mm long (252 mm shorter than the Tiguan), and it has a 2,603 mm wheelbase. The SUV’s width is 1,819 mm without the mirrors, and its height is 1,573 mm. For comparison, the current Golf measures 4,255 mm long, 1,799 mm wide, 1,452 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2,637 mm.

The standard model will include two-zone climate control, Composition Media infotainment system with 8" color touch-screen, Bluetooth telephone and audio connection, DAB radio, USB connectivity and 16-inch alloys.

The T-Roc Design spices things up with color dash and interior door panels, ambient lighting and the availability of the Active Info Display (standard on the SEL).

When the full range becomes available, expect to be tempted by the T-Roc Beats and its 400-watt audio system. Also on the shopping list are various safety systems which will be added early in 2018, like Traffic Jam Assist and the Blind Spot Monitor lane change system.
