Volkswagen Sharan Gets New 115 HP 2.0 TDI Engine

German automaker Volkswagen has just announced a new engine will be introduced to the range available for its big MPV. Specifically, buyers looking to own the Trendline version of the Sharan will be able to specify it with a new, efficient 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine.

As a four-cylinder diesel engine with 6-speed manual transmission, the TDI meets the Euro 5 emissions standard. The four-cylinder turbocharged diesel comes with common-rail injection and produces 115 horsepower. Its 280 Nm of torque is available on a wide rev band, between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. The unit is also efficient, as it burns on 5.5L/100km (51 mpg) on the combined cycle.

As you might imagine, performance on a big vehicle like this isn’t exactly brisk, but given the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 12.6 seconds and top speed or 183 km/h (113 mph), you won’t get easily frustrated with it.

The second generation Volkswagen Sharan broke cover last year, in the eve of the Geneva Auto Show, bringing with it new features, engines and design to a generation which was probably the oldest in its segment.

In addition to this 115 hp 2.0 TDI, the Sharan is available with four other engines. On the diesel side, VW offers two TSI engines, developing 150 hp and 200 hp, while on the petrol front, the TDI units output 140 hp and 170 hp.

This year saw the DSG double clutch gearbox appear on the Sharan’s optional equipment list - as a premiere, this will be available on all the models in the range. The 4Motion four-wheel drive system was also introduced as an option this year.
