Volkswagen Settles 3.0L TDI V6 Problem in the U.S., Indicates Potential Buyback

Almost two months since it first came to our attention as a report, the Volkswagen Group and the U.S. DOJ reached an agreement with the environmental regulators on what do to with its emissions-spewing V6 TDIs. Affected owners are also at a win despite this mess of a situation from the VW Group's part.

From a total approximated at $1 billion, the settlement over turbo diesel V6-powered vehicles will see the Volkswagen Group of America pay $225 million to an environmental remediation trust, plus $25 million to the peeps over at CARB to support the use of zero-emissions vehicles in the State of California.

The rest of the money? Well, that’s for fixing or buying back an estimated 83,000 vehicles equipped with the V6 TDI. As per the Consent Decree, there are two types of affected vehicles:

- Generation 1 V6 TDI-engined vehicles, i.e. approximately 20,000 units of 2009 to 2012 model year Volkswagens and Audis;

- Generation 2 V6 TDI-engined vehicles, i.e. approximately 63,000 units of 2013 to 2016 model year Volkswagens, Audis, and Porsches.

Yes, even the Porsche Cayenne 3.0-liter V6 TDI. Other nameplates that are equipped with the emissions-spewing powerplant include the VW Touareg, Audi Q7, Audi Q5, Audi A8, Audi A7, and Audi A6. Volkswagen will offer more info on this subject, at the earliest, in the spring of 2017. That’s because the terms of the agreement will be effective and final only after approval from a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

“We are committed to earning back the trust of all our stakeholders and thank our customers and dealers in the United States for their patience as the process moves forward,” declared Hinrich J. Woebcken, the president and chief executive officer of Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “[...] we support the efforts of the Court to bring about a fair and reasonable resolution of remaining 3.0L TDI V6 claims as quickly as possible," he concluded.
