Faith in the Volkswagen brand has been restored today! After weeks of seeing the Golf’s Spanish hot sister, the SEAT Leon Cupra, dance all over the R badge, the Scirocco R rises from its ashes looking ready to fight, it’s re-sharpened spear ready.
Wile the initial details were available when the ‘Rocco R facelift was unveiled in Geneva, the latest details paint a more complete and exciting picture. We all know that the updates R coupe has a 280 PS engine, right? Turns out this has had a dramatic affect on performance. 0 to 100 km/h now takes 5.5 seconds with the optional DSG gearbox.

That’s nothing short of impressive for a front-wheel drive hot hatch with a coupe body on top. To put that into perspective, the SEAT Leon Cupra takes 5.7 seconds to reach the same speed using the exact same power output form a 2.0 TSI. Witchcraft, it has to be German witchcraft!

We could give you a whole list of Hyundai, Opels and Alfas the new Scirocco R humiliates. However, it’s far more relevant to talk about the car that are harder to beat. For example, the Scirocco R is now aster than a base Porsche Boxster, which needs 5.8 seconds to reach the magic speed. The Volkswagen two-door is also faster than every Audi A5 model, despite costing a lot less.

While you’re rushing off to your local dealer, there’s one more thing to consider: the looks. There’s no getting around the fact that this is an older car. However, Volkswagen has hidden this well with new headlights, all-LEd taillights and alloy wheels stolen from the Golf R. The interior changes are less successful, but the new steering wheel and nav system are great feature. Plus, it’s not like SEAT makes the best interiors around, so if you want a FWD 2-door with 280 PS and a limited slip differential, you could go all-German once more, staring today.

The photos Volkswagen released in March made the Scirocco R look like a hippo in a ballet dress. They were probably computer-generated, but these latest ones make the same look sharp and elegant. It seems Volkswagen was on to something when offering a facelift instead of an all-new model. No if only somebody could give us €20,000 off, we would sign our soul over to this little German devil.

Prices in Germany have already been announced and the configurator is online. With a manual, the Scirocco R stickers at €36,175 and the 6-speed DSG increases that to €38,075. That makes this sexy coupe slightly cheaper than a Golf R, which starts at €38,325 with a manual. However, because the 'Rocco R doesn't have start-stop, fuel consumption is much higher at 11.1 l/100km in the city (energy class F), compared to just 8.8 for the more powerful Golf R (energy class D), which also has AWD.
