Volkswagen's lineup of Scirocco models sold in Britain has just been extended with the arrival of two Black Edition models. The idea is simple: you take the standard car and make it look cooler by adding black everywhere. But it's not a transformation you feel obliged to write home about.
The Black Edition package is available on the GT and R-Line trim levels. Both cars feature black painted alloy wheels, a black contrasting roof, door mirrors and rear spoiler. To complete the look, the rear windows have also received a strong tint.
The Scirocco GT Black Edition is fitted with 18-inch "Lisbon" alloy wheels, while the R-Line Black Edition gets 19-inch "Lugano" alloys.
Volkswagen says the respective special editions cost £550 more than the equivalent GT or R-Line trim. The carmaker adds that the Black Edition constitutes great value because the wheels and window tint alone would cost £680 to option. Well, whoop-dee-doo!
Standard kit on all the Scirocco models includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connection, DAB digital radio, air conditioning, auto headlights and wipers, LED taillights, sports seats and a leather steering wheel. Also included in the GT Black Edition are dual-zone climate control, fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, and partial Alcantara upholstery.
Prices start at £23,135 for the model equipped with a 1.4-liter TSI BlueMotion base engine rated at 125 PS (123bhp). Compared to that car, the R-Line trim has sportier bumpers, carbon-effect dash inserts, heated sports seats and an R-Line steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever. It too comes with a 1.4 TSI as standard and will set you back £27,260.
Several other engines are also available as options. The most powerful gasoline unit is a 2.0 TSI rated at 170 PS that can take you from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. The best engine for fuel efficiency is the 2.0 TDI 150 PS with a 6-speed manual. However, there's also an 184 PS version that gets similar mpg numbers.
Our say: Volkswagen has just announced it's cutting the number of trim levels to save money for the TDI engine emission fixes. So if you fancy black wheels that are easily scratched, get this thing fast.
