Volkswagen Sales Grow 11.2% in First Four Months

Volkswagen has reported an increase in passenger car deliveries in the first four months of this year to 1.66 million units, an increase of 11.2 percent compared to the 1.49 million achieved in the same months of last year. The brand delivered 429,200 vehicles to customers in the month of April alone, some 13 percent more than last year.

“Deliveries by the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand continue to develop well. Our attractive, eco-friendly model range is being well received by our customers all over the world,” Christian Klingler, Board Member for Sales and Marketing for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, commented in Wolfsburg on Tuesday.

The brand reported 20 percent growth in the Asia / Pacific region, delivering 639,200 vehicles there, of which 578,200 units were handed over in China, the largest single market. The result from India were also extremely encouraging, with 24,800 vehicles delivered to customers in the period to April, almost nine times as many as during the comparable prior-year period.

Despite sluggish market conditions, overall result in Europe were also up, with Volkswagen Passenger Cars handing over 567,100 models to customers in the first four months, 3.7 percent more than in April 2010. A rise in demand was seen in the Central and East European region: 53,900 (39,200; +37.7 percent) units were delivered there from January to April.

Sales almost doubled in Russia, where VW handed over 24,900 (12,800; +93.8 per cent) units. Meanwhile, in the all-important North American market, Volkswagen Passenger Cars also grew deliveries to 149,400 units, 17.1 percent higher than the 127,600 more than a year ago.
