The young people from Volkswagen Saxony have presented their vision of mobility in the ID.5 GTX Xcite. Volkswagen organizes an apprenticeship program in its Saxony locations to support the development of younger talent; they currently have 573 apprentices and young people on dual courses of study.
Aside from 2020, when the pandemic interfered with activities, apprentices in Saxony have been modifying cars every year since 2014 and demonstrating their skills in these yearly projects. The apprentices from Zwickau, Dresden, and Chemnitz do it by working under expert supervision to build the annual show cars.
This year, 14 specialists have created the Xcite, a symbol of their high-quality training and high level of expertise. Let's see what it's all about.
The Xcite show car is based on the standard ID.5 GTX, which they modified to showcase how the future of transportation looks for them. Modifications were done on several levels, from the vehicle's mechanics to its design, bodywork, and paint.
Creating a new variation of a car is no easy feat – the apprentices had to work closely together, plan, and reach a joint agreement on how to implement the changes they have decided on.
The first noticeable changes are to the exterior. Featuring a matt and gloss paintwork from the Lamborghini and VW paint ranges, it's made to grab your attention, especially when you notice the 22" (56 centimeters) forged aluminum wheels that make it look even more imposing.
The wheelhouses were modified, the front and rear fenders were also changed, and the door sills were widened, giving the ID.5 GTX more of an aggressive look.
Sustainability is a key focus for today's automotive industry, and the apprentices had this in mind when choosing to use both Alcantara and vegan leather. What's more, the seating choice is one of the best parts of the Xcite's interior. Featuring the ID. honeycomb pattern on central sections of the seats and door trims, the cabin bears a pretty sporty look. They also embroidered the front headrests with the ID. logo combined with a figure 8 to symbolize their 8th project completion.
The car boasts a powerful digital sound system. The apprentices have added ten amplifiers and a subwoofer from Gladen, Musway, and Bang & Olufsen equipment with a total output of 2000W.
The final touch for the Xcite show car is the Teamgee H5 electric skateboard, an additional statement toward the future of mobility.
