Volkswagen has big plans for this year’s Paris Motor Show, which will be unfolded in the form of the presentation of a design study that was described to be “as revolutionary as the first Beetle.”
Volkswagen has published a set of design sketches of the upcoming concept, and it is a hatchback that will be all-electric. The car has no production plans per se, because it is a concept vehicle for exhibition and inspiration purposes, but it will mark a milestone for the German company. Volkswagen said that this car has the potential to “define history.”
The automaker went as far as to compare this all-electric concept car that has an unknown name at the moment with its first ever car, which we now refer to as the first Beetle.
Seven decades ago, the first ever Volkswagen put Germans on the road in affordable automobiles, which were cheaper than ever before. The Beetle eventually became an icon of pop culture and was renowned for its production figures and its long manufacturing cycle, which lasted many decades.
Volkswagen has also explained that this concept vehicle will inspire a production car, and that the particular model will be the first that will be based on the company’s modular electrification kit, known as the MEB platform.
The latter might be a revolution of the automotive world, but Volkswagen should move as promptly as possible if it plans to get a good spot in the electrification of the modern automobile.
If VW arrives late to the massive range electric car party, it would have to bring a damn good model on the market to convince customers to choose an EV from them instead of a Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus Electric, or Tesla Model 3, just to name a few.
Volkswagen does have two production electric cars in its lineup, based on the Golf and the Up!, but these are not available in as many markets as the Nissan Leaf, and their popularity is not as strong as competitor cars that have been launched earlier.
As you can observe in the photos in the gallery, the concept vehicle has rear doors with a slide opening mechanism, a set of sleek taillights, and an all-new front end.
The latter will undoubtedly inspire future cars from Volkswagen, while the rear will hopefully also be an inspiration for the upcoming creations of the Wolfsburg automaker.
