On December 20th, Volkswagen accidentally released a video of the Golf R Cabriolet on one of its European Youtube channels. It was moved to the "private" within a couple of days but we still got a good look at the car, which looked like a MkVI Golf, not the newer model that made its debut in Paris last September.
Today, Volkswagen actually revealed the first-ever Golf R Cabriolet in all its glory. As we predicted, it's built on the older model's platform, since the new R won't be ready until 2014 (currently undergoing testing in Sweden).
As a consequence of its old architecture, the R Cabriolet has a 2-liter turbo engine producing 265 PS (261hp). This is mated to the standard Haldex all-wheel drive and a standard six-speed DSG gearbox.
The standard 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time is 6.4 seconds, 0.4 seconds slower than the R20 hatchback, but still faster than most hot hatches. Just like the GTI Cabriolet, this car has a folding fabric roof that opens and closes in about 10 seconds.
Pricing has been set at £38,770 OTR in the UK, and €43,325 in Germany. No word on US availability as of yet.
