Volkswagen Recalls Almost 200,000 Cars in Brazil

Volkswagen announce that it will recall 193,620 vehicles in Brazil due to a lubrication issue which could cause the rear wheels to lock or even fall off.

The models affected by the recall are the Novo Gol and Voyage domestically produced before July 2009.

According to Volkswagen Brasil’s website, driving the aforementioned Novo Gol and Voyage cars "can cause noise and continuous use could lead to a blockage of the wheels. In extreme cases, the wheel can come off,". The website also said that the recall was “preventive”.

This is Volkswagen’s third recall on the Brazilian market. In December 2008, 120,000 Novo Gol, Voyage and Fox models were recalled by the company to fix a braking problem. Earlier that year, in April, the carmaker recalled 477,000 Fox models (these have been produced in Brasil) due to a problem with the rear seat. The issue generated serious problems, as multiple users were injured trying to fold down the back seat.

In 2009 Volkswagen Brazil announced its intentions to invest 3.5 billion dollars in the company’s developments over the next fifteen years. The company also said that it aims to sell a million cars per year by 2014. A strong new model offensive has been prepared for 2010 as a part of the plan to reach the desired goal. Volkswagen do Brasil Ltda. is a subsidiary of Volkswagen group which was established in 1953.
