Volkswagen Recalls 377,000 Cars For Fuel Leak Hazard

Volkswagen AG announced it would recall more than 377,000 vehicles over concerns that a faulty windshield washer reservoir could cause fuel leaks.

The recall involves approximately 228,236 2007-2009 MY Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen built between March 2006 and June 2009, 38,700 2007-2009 MY Golf/Rabbit built March 2007 through November 2008 as well as 110,350 2006-2010 MY New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible built June 2005 through October 2009. Only cars that are equipped with 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engines are affected by the recall.

The Jetta, Jetta Sportwagen, Golf and Rabbit may have a small plastic tab located on the windshield washer fluid reservoir that may chafe against an underhood fuel supply line. The New Beetles may have a fastening clamp on a hydraulic hose of the power steering system that may be located in an improper position which could cause chafing against an underhood fuel line.

Should chafing occur, there is a potential for a fuel leak to develop, which in turn could lead to a fire hazard. Volkswagen was unable to estimate how many vehicles would require repairs. No reports of injury, crash or fires resulting from this condition were recorded.

Owners of affected vehicles need to take their Volkswagens to a dealer where a technician will remove the plastic tab from the windshield washer fluid reservoir in Jetta, Jetta SportWagen and Golf/Rabbit vehicles. Technicians will inspect the position of the fastening clamp and adjust it into the correct position in New Beetle vehicles. The intervention will be at no cost to the owner.

The recall will begin in January-February, when parts become available.
