The factory-tuned segment of the automotive industry just got a bit hotter today, after German carmaker Volkswagen announced the R used on some of its high-performance models will no longer be just a badge, but the sign of a brand new company: Volkswagen R GmbH.
As you might imagine, the main task of the new entity will be to build "sporty exclusive models from Volkswagen in the future." To do that, Volkswagen has passed "responsibilities and competencies for development, implementations and sales of individualized vehicle offers" to the new formed company.
The R Division already has two top models in its portfolio, the Scirocco R and the Golf R, who have also been passed over by VW. In addition, Volkswagen R also includes the R Line design packages and Volkswagen Exclusive items.
Of course, you might wonder how will this affect you, the buyer. Well, it is to be expected the same care and consideration for the R line to be given to future models as well.
"The company’s name, Volkswagen R GmbH, responds to the increased global demand for individualized vehicles with contemporary sportiness and exclusivity. The sporty positioning will be reflected more intensely in the program of Volkswagen R in the mid and long term," Volkswagen says in the release announcing the move.
Volkswagen R GmbH has been initially announced at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show. The company will employ 350 and will be based near Wolfsburg.
