Sometimes, what seems funny on paper proves insulting to some people in real life, and that’s basically what has happened with a recently launched VW commercial from Canada. This centers around the new Passat, in which a husband pull up in front of the emergency hospital.
The EMT gets all excited about the car, so he and thrive chat up a storm, ignoring the wife’s gestation. Despite the woman’s cries, they check out the leather interior and the features. The ad finishes with the husband shutting the door and forgetting about the emergency at hand.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press, VW Canada received a number of complaints from people who found the ad offensive.
"I don't know if they used the word sexist but the gist of the complaint was that we weren't very fair to the pain and suffering that goes along with childbirth," Volkswagen Canada spokesman Thomas Tetzlaff said Tuesday. "Upon second thought we thought, holy cow, that certainly wasn't the intent, but if anybody construes that way, we should pull it."
