Volkswagen used the Beijing Auto Show to showcase its first electric vehicle entirely designed and produced in China, the E-Lavida concept car.

The car is an electric version of the Lavida sedan, which is based on the fourth generation Golf platform. It was developed by the German carmaker’s joint venture with the Chinese Shanghai Automotive company.

Unfortunately, Volkswagen did not release any technical details about the electric vehicle. However, from what we can see in the pictures released by the company, the E-Lavida will use an electric motor mounted in the location of the traditional internal combustion unit and a battery pack that is located at the rear of the vehicle.

In addition to introducing the E-Lavida concept, Volkswagen presented its e-Mobility strategy (the carmaker’s eco pathway) for the world’s greatest automotive market.

"The e-mobility strategy for China is perfectly tailored to local needs. Volkswagen will provide its entire BlueMotion technology to the two Chinese joint ventures for local production. The Volkswagen Group China has a hundred percent committed to the aim of providing Chinese consumers with innovative, energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies available to achieve sustainable development. We are confident that will develop the Volkswagen Group China through our commitment to the market leader for e-mobility technologies in China," said Winfried Vahland, CEO of Volkswagen Group China.

"Our goal is market leadership in e-Mobility (by) 2018. China is the world's most important market for the Volkswagen Group, and the success of e-mobility in China is crucial to the global implementation of (the) e-Mobility strategy," added Dr. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen AG.
