The new Polo is expected to represent a major market hit for Volkswagen as the German brand intends to sell the car at a global level and even design a series of new models based on it. One of these would be a new convertible which might be released in a few years, autocar.co.uk reported today citing sources close to the matter.
There's nothing confirmed at this point, but Volkswagen might be indeed preparing a convertible flavor as the company is also working on an estate version of Polo, dubbed Variant, plus a people-carrier that could go on sale in a few years. The estate version of the Polo is a very likely scenario because the German automaker has already debuted Variant versions of other models, including Golf - whose estate version was rolled out at Frankfurt.
According to the aforementioned source, a final decision is to be made in a few months, after designing a business plan to include the convertible Polo.
"The Polo range is gaining tremendous momentum here. The declared goal is to accelerate sales of the Polo to match those of Europe’s most successful car, the Golf," Volkswagen said in a release after rolling out the three-door version of the car at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
The three-door version will hit stores this autumn and will be available for a starting price of 12,150 euros for the entry level Polo 1.2 Trendline with ESP. The number of available engines for the car extends to six, with power outputs ranging from 60 PS to 105 PS. There will be three equipment levels available: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline.
