Volkswagen Phaeton Facelift to Be Introduced at the Beijing Auto Show

Volkswagen is expected to introduce the facelifted version of its flagship saloon, the Phaeton, at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show.

The premium vehicle will adopt the new VW family identity, especially when it comes to the front fascia. This will feature LED daytime running lights, a bold front grille and a sleek overall design.

However, the most important changes are expected to happen in the powertrain area, as the Phaeton is expected to receive the new engines introduced on the Audi Q7 SUV. These are two versions of the 3.0 liter TFSI unit, which use direct injection and forced induction in order to offer excellent fuel efficiency.

The more modest one offers 272 hp and 400 Nm of torque, replacing the 3.6 liter FSI V6, while the beefier one delivers 333 hp and 440 Nm of torque. The latter is the engine from the Audi S4 hot saloon and take the place of the old 4.2 liter FSI V8.

The Volkswagen Phaeton was Ferdinand Piech’s (VW Group’s chairman) bet that the brand can battle Mercedes and BMW in the premium segment. The vehicle was introduced in 2002 and offered excellent value for money. Its petrol engine range included a 3.2l V6, a 4.2l V8 and a 6.0l W12, while diesel-lovers could choose between a 3l V6 TDI and a 5l V10 TDI.

However, the Phaeton never really managed to convince luxury clients in terms of image, so the car’s sales fell short of expectations, sending its resale value through the floor. We'll have to wait and see if VW can give a boost to the big saloon.
