Produced from 2006 to 2016 in Germany, the former-gen Volkswagen Crafter light commercial vehicle is preparing to switch homes. Today, October 24, the manufacturer inaugurated the site where the 2017 Crafter will be produced, in Wrzesnia, Poland.
Two years after the first spade and following an investment of 800 million euros or thereabout, Volkswagen is proud to announce that the Wrzesnia facility is the “most advanced new factory of its kind” in Europe. Just about 1,000 guests from all walks of life were invited to the grand opening, representing a third of the workforce. With 3,000 workers on tap, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles hopes to assemble as many as 100,000 units of the Crafter per year at the Polish site.
Other than creating new jobs for the people of Wrzesnia, the Volkswagen plant is also responsible for creating new jobs for suppliers located in the vicinity of the site. Stretched across 220 hectares (2.2 square kilometers), the plant will operate in three shifts to churn out roughly 380 vehicles per day. 69 configurations of the 2017 Volkswagen Crafter will be produced in Wrzesnia, with cargo volumes of up to 18.4 cubic meters and a gross weight of up to 5.5 tonnes.
Already named “International Van of the Year 2017,” the Volkswagen Crafter is no longer related to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Having made its debut at the IAA, the all-new Crafter is underpinned by an all-new platform that can be tailored for front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive applications. The modern-looking van also boasts with the best drag coefficient in its segment (Cd 0.33). Under the hood, a Euro 6-compliant 2.0 TDI in Nutzfahrzeuge specification will take care of propulsion.
At the top of the range, a bi-turbo version of the 2.0-liter oil-burning engine churns out 177 PS (175 horsepower). Lower down, the most anemic version of the EA288 engine produces 102 PS (100 horsepower). An automatic tranny is also available, as is a backup camera and adaptive cruise control. As a brief refresher, the 2017 Volkswagen Crafter is currently available in 4 base models, 3 lengths, and in 3 heights.
