Volkswagen Not Bringing Subcompacts to US Yet

Ford has the Fiesta, Fiat has the shameful 500 and even Chevrolet is getting in on the act with the 2013 Spark, but Volkswagen isn’t yet convinced that bringing subcompacts to the US market is the best thing to do.

The Polo and Up! sound like interesting proposition to European consumers, but a North American exec has told CanAndDriver that they don’t plan to go smaller than the Golf or Jetta, for the time being at least.

The decision has something to do with how Americans perceive these vehicles, but there’s something else in the mix besides sales and that is profit. Smaller cars aren’t naturally associated with premium quality in America, so the are sold for much thinner profit margins.
