Volkswagen Might Turn Beetle into a Speedster

The funky-looking concept car you see here is the E-Bugster Concept that will officially bow at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show today. In our eyes it combines two very different worlds. On one hand, it’s a hunkered down and lighted speedster, and on the other it’s an electric car.
AutoCar today reports that public reaction in Detroit will determine if VW will sell this as the third variant of the 21st Century Beetle. No official word yet, but the concept’s designer says there’s a strong chance if the market case is found.

"This is a serious proposal for a speedster Beetle and I am sure it will come for production", says designer Mark Lichter, "we just need to find the business case".

We did a little research and found out that Lichter was also responsible for the Cross Coupe shown in Tokyo late last year, and we’re now fond of his work. There’s no way of knowing if VW wants an electric car in its range, but we think the rumor actually refers to the speedster look, not putting the whole E-Buster concept into production.

The shape of the car is inspired by Lichter's own 964 Porsche 911 Speedster. The hight of the windshield has been reduced by 65 mm and the high point of the roof is moved backwards, giving the look of an arching animal in combination with the curb of the side windows. 'A Beetle Speedster is the perfect car for the US,' says Lichter.
