With the Touareg and Tiguan on sale in the US, and the tendency to create niches where there really aren’t any, Jonathan Browning, CEO of Volkswagen of America, said, after a Automotive Press Association meeting, that VW needs a vehicle to sit between the aforementioned SUVs.
Browning seemed genuinely pleased by the idea, saying “If you could give it to me tomorrow, I would take it tomorrow,” and “It’s a great opportunity.” Apparently, VW could in fact build the new mid-sized SUV at their Tennessee plant, in Chattanooga, a factory currently churning out US Passats at a rate of 150,000 of them per year.
Also, VW are adding a third shift to the factory, bringing the total number of workers at the plant close to 3,500, by the end of the year. The extra workers would assure that the plant has ample capacity for an extra model to be produced, and would boost capacity to 180,000 cars annually by the end of next year.
Only time will tell whether this will materialize into an actual vehicle, but if they do make it, it will definitely sell well, despite probably looking exactly as you’d imagine it - as bland as all recent VWs.
