Volkswagen Makes Its Own Biodiesel, Plans to Sell It as Green Premium

With all the new emission regulations either already set in place or planned to be introduced, carmakers across the world scramble to find new ways to make their vehicles compliant.

For most of them, that means introducing electric cars, but for few  with more stringent needs that even means creating their own fuel.

There are some carmakers currently trying to make alternative fuels for internal combustion engines, most of them going for converting cooking fat or oil into fuel to power car engines.

German manufacturer Volkswagen, together with the Coburg University, announced at the end of last week that the fuel they’ve created, called R33BlueDiesel, has ended the testing stage at the company’s location in Wolfsburg with success.

The fuel has been used ever since the beginning of the year to power the company’s own cars. The R33 BlueDiesel is based on the fuel developmed by Finnish oil company Neste about a decade ago and is compliant with diesel standard DIN EN 590.

According to Volkswagen, while using this fuel the company cars managed to cut down CO2 emissions by 20 percent, when compared to conventional diesel and measured on well to wheel criteria.

As a result of this, an entire filling station dedicated to R33 has been set up in Wolfsburg, while test operations have begun at the Volkswagen plant in Salzgitter.

As per statements from Volkswagen officials, this fuel could eventually end up at the public filling station as Green Premium.

"The response to R33 BlueDiesel is very encouraging for Volkswagen and its project partners,” said in a statement Thomas Garbe, Volkswagen project manager.

“We are preparing for a significant increase in demand for liquid fuels from residual materials and for advanced biofuels in the medium term. I hope that public filling stations will also be offering R33 as Green Premium in the near future."
