The Wolfsburg Edition used to stand for a lot more than just a bunch of stickers. Regardless, we have a new arrival to the Australian car market, a Golf R Wagon model making its debut with the limited-run Wolfsburg Edition package.
When we first saw these photos of the Golf R Wagon Wolfsburg Edition, we thought something fishy was going on. After all, Wolfsburg Editions are for the Americans, and the Germans use the "Variant" name.

Our suspicions weren't unfounded, as instead of getting more, Australians have to make due with less. Just like in Japan, the 2-liter turbocharged engine produces only 280 PS, 20 less than the Euro-spec model. As standard, the turbocharged engine (no, it's not a TDI) is matched to a six-speed DSG transmission that sends power to all four wheels via the 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

The Golf R has been available in Australia for many years. However, this R Wagon is a little different. It's longer and offers an additional 262 liters (9.2 cu-ft) of storage space, bringing the total to a very respectable 605 liters.

The effect on performance isn't major, as 0 to 100 km/h takes 5.2 seconds, compared to 5.0s in the hatch. The downside to all this space is that the total weight of the car is 1,574 kilograms (3,470 lbs), which is positively huge for a compact and on par with a BMW 335i sedan.

German cars are famous for being expensive in Australia, and the Golf R Wagon Wolfsburg Edition is no exception. It stickers for AUD58,990 (plus on-road costs), AUD2000 more than an equivalent Golf R hatch fitted with the limited Wolfsburg Edition package.

What do you get? Black 19-inch wheels, mirror caps, trim and roof rails. A few Wolfsburg badges aren't going to impress anybody, but the interior features black leather seats and faux carbon fiber accents. Still, what's wrong with the 2015 Subaru WRX STI, which is AUD9,000 cheaper and has a lot more power.
