Volkswagen Jetta CC Will Enter Production in 2016

Volkswagen's New Midsize Coupe (NMC) Concept was just shown at the Beijing Auto Show and it created quite a stir with fans of the brand, especially the ones who like sedan boots on their sports vehicles, not sloped hatches. For them, the widebody design philosophy of the Scirocco is being applied on something that looks like an exaggerated Jetta.

According to Automotive News, the NMC concept closely previews a production model which will be based on the next generation Jetta sedan. The MQB platform would be widened and lowered to create a dynamically competent car with svelte looks, to be launched in 2016.

Looking at the NMC, it's easy to believe that it's production-ready. The concept has standard door handles, large door mirrors and standard LED headlight technology. But since the Jetta just received a facelift, it's hard to fathom how 2016 launch date for its coupe-ish cousin will stick. We can only hope that it does.

Like the Jetta GLI sold in the US, the New Midsize Coupe packs the same sort of engine as a Golf GTI. 220 PS from the same 2.0 TSI engine as the GTI delivers the same 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds as the GTI. Top speed is a respectable 244 km/h (151 mph). Of course, once it enters production, more mainstream mills should be adopted, stuff like the 150 PS 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI and large diesels as well.

The Jetta CC would be cheaper than a Passat CC and offered accross the world. Production could take place at the Puebla factory in Mexico where the Jetta and Golf are made, as well as in China.

Volkswagen says it's named this latest creation a "Midsize" because it's wide as a midsize car (Passat). Its length (just under 4.6 meters) is actually shorter not only than the Passat, but also the Jetta. If this car is ready by 2016, there really won't be any point to bringing the Scirocco stateside any more.
