Volkswagen ID.3 R Naturally Slots Above the GTX Series, Albeit Only Virtually

Unlike with some of Tesla's products, when you see any of Volkswagen's ID. Series' cars one does not immediately think of mixing zero emissions with stellar acceleration performance. Well, the German automaker is trying to change the perception, but perhaps they are not doing it the right “R” way.

Back in late April, the German carmaker unveiled its first-ever VW ID.4 GTX, a 295-horsepower GTI-style electric crossover. Even better, it was just the first of a new breed as the new moniker started trickling down to other MEB architecture models, such as the ID.5 GTX. Eventually, the strategy is to see every member of the ID. family sporting the same dynamic styling cues and similar performance features.

Still, note one massively important aspect: both the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX have the same twin-electric motor powertrain with “just” 295 horsepower on tap. It might sound like a great deal for regular ICE drivers, but any Tesla Plaid would laugh its battery pack away as it puts all those 1,020 ponies to work and leave any VW GTX in a cloud of electron dust.

Alas, there is one simple solution, according to Kleber Silva, a Brazil-based virtual artist known as KDesign AG on social media, who has digitally gone to Europe for a quick high-performance stint with a German EV twist: just make the ID.s part of the “R” division and be done with it. Naturally, he also produced a suggested starting point, a 2023-model year Volkswagen ID.3 R high-performance hatchback.

While this might be entirely wishful thinking, eventually it might just be the logical zero-emission way forward. After all, ICE and R will not be able to mix forever, and the division needs to look forward to a sustainable future if it wants to ensure its survival. However, a 2023 model year ID.3 R is probably out of the question – whether or not they would use the same subtle tweaks as envisioned on Behance by the prolific CGI expert.
