Volkswagen’s electric racer, the I.D. R Pikes Peak, made a name for itself in racing history this June, when it set the all-time record for the famous climb. Now, it’s getting ready to wow the crowds at Pebble Beach, in its first show-and-tell public outing.
Volkswagen chose to show the model at the 18th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Links in California not only as a means to brag with the I.D. R, but also as a tribute to the 2017 presentation of the I.D. BUZZ microbus.

The BUZZ was confirmed one year ago to go into production in 2022 as one of five models to be built on the MEB platform. The car will likely enter service as part of the German’s Moia ride-sharing service, which they will launch in the first years of the following decade.

As said, back in June the I.D. R, piloted by Porsche factory driver Romain Dumas, clocked a time of 7:57:148 minutes at Pikes Peak, more than a minute faster than the electric car time achieved by Rhys Millen back in 2016 and 16 seconds faster than all-time record set by Sébastien Loeb in 2013.

The I.D. R is powered by two electric motors that give it 680 horsepower and torque rated at 650 Nm. That’s enough to boost the machine from naught to sixty-two faster than Formula 1 and Formula E cars, in only 2.25 seconds.

The design of the racer was confirmed by Volkswagen to preview the new line of cars that is expected to hit the roads as soon as 2020.

Including its battery cells, the I.D. R Pikes Peak weighs less than 1,100 kilograms (2,425 lbs.), allowing for an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

Several other VW-branded cars will be on site for the Pebble Beach event as well: the Atlas Tanoak and the Atlas Cross Sport, both shown for the first time this year at the New York Auto Show.
