Volkswagen Has Built 43 Million Cars in Wolfsburg

Although VW's name has been forever tarnished by the Dieselgate scandal, the story of Europe's biggest car company is a very interesting one.

They have dozens of production facilities across the world, make more engines than we can count and sell about 300 models under a dozen brands. But none of it would be possible without the famous factory in Wolfsburg.

On Tuesday, the 43 millionth vehicle came off the assembly line in Wolfsburg. The milestone car is a Pure White Touran, a vehicle that has been made there since 2003.

Plant manager Jens Herrmann says, "Our employees are working in all areas with great commitment to manufacturing products in the highest quality. The long experience and the expertise of our team make this possible."

Currently, VW's home factory makes the Golf, Touran and Tiguan families. Preparations are underway for the start of production of the new Tiguan SUV, which should take place in early January.

Wolfsburg has a long history that only really started after World War II. The German economy was in tatters. Knowing that the country wouldn't recover otherwise, the allies gave permission for the Beetle to be assembled there.

Ten years later, they had only reached one million units produced, but the number rose to 11,916,519 in 1974.

That's the year the first generation of the Golf arrived and changed the entire European automotive scene. By 1976, Volkswagen had already sold one million units. The first diesel engines were added, as well as more features and body styles.

In the 1990s, Wolfsburg extended the range by adding the Polo and Lupo subcompacts. The anniversary of the 25 millionth Golf was celebrated in 2007, followed by the 30 millionth car built in 2013. A total of more than 20 different car models have been produced at the Wolfsburg plant, including the Passat, Audi 50, Audi 80, Audi 100, Jetta, Bora, Golf Variant, and SEAT Arosa.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
