The Wolfsburg passenger vehicle manufacturer tells that 3.07 million cars bearing VW badges have been delivered worldwide from January to June 2014, representing an increase of 3.8 percent over the same period last year. Last month, the German carmaker sold 514,900 automobiles, a slightly higher number than the 509,200 cars delivered by Volkswagen in June 2013.
The biggest growth in deliveries was met in the Asia-Pacific region, where Volkswagen sales in the first half of the year increased by 16.8 percent or 1.50 million vehicles, which is miles better than the 1.28 million cars sold in the first six months of the previous year. Amazingly enough, some 1.39 million units were sold in China (including Hong Kong), representing a 18.5 percent increase over January - June 2013.
However, Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand hasn't enjoyed a good half-year in most other parts of the globe. North America sales topped 282,600 vehicles, a 8.7 decrease compared to the first half of 2013, while South America region sales dropped by 21.1 percent to 317,300 units compared to the 401,900 sold in the first six months of the previous year.
Deliveries in Germany increased by a mere 0.8 percent to 285,700 cars, while Eastern and Central Europe bought 4.0 percent less Volkswagens compared to the same period last year, totaling just 127,100 vehicles. Data shows that 67,400 or 12.8 percent less vehicles were handed over to customers in Russia, while Western Europe sales (excluding Germany) increased 5.5 percent in the first six months of 2014, translating to 451,300 cars delivered.
“Developments at Volkswagen Passenger Cars in the first half year were stable thanks to the brand’s convincing model range. The Golf in particular continues to be a bestseller – not only as a classic Golf, but also in the Variant or Sportsvan versions”, declared Christian Klingler, board member for Sales and Marketing for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. Klingler continued: “The situation on global markets will remain challenging in the second half of the year and will keep us very much on our toes.”
