Volkswagen Golf VII R Will Cost Less and Produce 300 HP

To be honest, the new Golf isn't that much lighter than the old one. But it is like the straight flush of family hatchbacks. Since it was launched last year at the Paris Motor Show, the variants have steadily come out, one after the other, until there's not much we don't know about it. However, the uncrowned king of the range is still nowhere in sight. We're talking about the all-mighty Golf R.

Last time we caught up with it, the next Golf R was undergoing winter testing in Sweden. At the time (January 2013), we believed it to have 290 horsepower at its disposal, but a report coming from Britain says it could have more.

Auto Express
says insiders have told them the car will definitely have at least 20 hp more than the outgoing model, pushing it right into Audi S3 territory. It will most certainly be a lot faster as well, and maybe a little lighter.

Unfortunately, it won't go on sale until early in 2014. But there is definitely a good reason to hold onto your money a bit longer. The same source says it will be slightly cheaper than the MkVI R, starting at around £30,000 in Britain.

Sounds to us like the dealer who gave Auto Express their GTI to test knows a little something we don't. It could be that the 4Motion system they developed for the regular Golf has saved some pennies. Overall, we could be looking at the all-wheel drive performance bargain of 2014.
