The Golf Cabriolet has really managed to make a comeback. For a while, it looked like the Eos was going to be the only drop-top VW, but then they revived the famous picnic basket with the sixth generation.
The model was promoted by singer Kylie Minogue and it was such a hit that they even launched a GTI version this year.
The open-top Golf will have to be replaced soon, since the Golf VII will replace the VI. Theophilus Chin has created a rendering for us to better understand what it might look like. If you’re thinking that it looks like a chopped hatchback, that’s because this is the design VW themselves went for.
Unfortunately, we can’t tell you when the new Golf VII Cabriolet will arrive, since no prototypes have been spotted yet, and VW needs to focus on the Beetle Cabrio first. For the rest of the year, the German factories will be cranking out the old Golfs, and the cabrios could stay in production even longer still.
But honestly, the MQB platform gives us plenty of things to be excited about, since it will help this car shed about 100 kg (220 lbs).
