Volkswagen has announced the Golf Variant and Scirocco facelift ranges will be updated by the arrival of new R-Line packages. These update the look of the cars and give them a sportier appearance without forcing VW’s buyers to go for the bigger engines that usually come with actual R models.
Of the two, the Golf Variant is the only model that’s all-new here, so we’ll start with that. We know the German brand is working to launch a real R estate and this is probably what it looks like. The R-Line body kit includes front and rear bumpers, a black ventilated grille, a slightly different upper grille with R logo, sporty rear diffuser, blackened fog lights, boot lid spoiler and side skirts.

Prices in Germany start at €1,055 for the top-spec Highline and €1,240 for the mid-grade Comfortline versions of the Golf Variant.

As usual, there’s also a cosmetic package for the interior, this time being slightly cheaper: €650 for the top-spec Highline and €955for the mid-grade Comfortline. It includes sportier seats, a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and stainless steel pedal caps.

None of these changes will actually make the Golf Variant feel different to drive, which is why we suggest you also look into the Sports Package. It costs a very reasonable €435, is available even on the base model and gives you sports suspension, progressive steering and tinted rear windows. It’s probably one of the cheapest option on any Golf, but make sure you can live with about 15mm chopped from the suspension.

Finally, let’s see what the facelifted 2014 Scirocco gets with the R-Line package. The exterior one includes new bumpers, aerodynamic side skirts and a rear spoiler. Revisions also target the fog lights, grille and wheels. We think the Scirocco looks sporty enough already, so we’d avoid the costly €2,060 and go for only the interior package.

This costs a much more reasonable €845 and includes Alcantara grey seats, a black headliner, carbon black dash inlays, a leather sports steering wheel and aluminum door sills.
