Volkswagen Golf Named Car of the Year in Japan

Some might say that the Ford Focus is more fun or that the French are bolder with their designs, but the Volkswagen Golf has been a benchmark in its class for a long time now. Apparently, compact family car buyers value efficiency, reliability and build quality, which suits Volkswagen.

After the seventh generation Golf was launched in 2012, it was named the European Car of the Year and World Car of the Year. Now, the new Golf can add another title: Car of the Year Japan. The award was handed over during the Tokyo Motor Show to Shigeru Shoji, president of Volkswagen Japan (picture above).

The Golf received 504 points from 60 members of a jury, which placed it ahead of Honda's new Jazz/Fit subcompact, which received 373 votes. In third place came the Volvo V40 with 167 votes.

“This is a very special award for us in so many ways. Firstly, our Golf 7 has become the first ever imported car to win Japan’s COTY award, and we achieved this in our 60th year since Volkswagen imports started into Japan,” commented Shigeru Shoji, president of Volkswagen Japan.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
