The Volkswagen Golf has been named the European Car of the Year 2013, winning the award by crushing the opposition.
The finalists were no match for the seventh-generation Golf in the eyes of this year's ECOTY judging team, receiving 414 votes, more than double than the second-placed Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ, which was handed 202 votes.
The Volvo V40 was placed third (189 votes), while the Ford B-Max and the Mercedes-Benz A Class took fourth and fifth position, with 148 and 138 votes respectively.
