German automaker Volkswagen is planning to expand its diesel lineup in the United States by bringing the Golf GTD over the Pond. While this may sound like good news for a lot of you folks that would drive an oil burner rather than a gas-powered vehicle, you’d better keep your shirt on for a little while longer because the GTD won’t arrive in America before 2015.
Speaking at a press briefing earlier this week, the company’s product manager for the Golf range, Andreas Valbuena, revealed that the US-spec GTD is likely to be sold as a 2016 model with prices starting at around $27,000. “We see it as a very important part of our full range of offerings, a technology halo for our diesel technology,” he said, adding that the GTD will account for between 5 and 10 percent of Golf sales.
Set to hit European dealerships this summer, the Volkswagen Golf GTD is powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine that delivers 184 HP (135 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque.
