Volkswagen Golf Electric Is Not a Threat

Volkswagen has been considering offering an electric version of the Golf for some time now, with the company announcing that the GOLF EV will enter the market in 2013.

Volkswagen is currently working on the project, but the company doesn’t plan to expand the electric mobility concept too much for the Golf range.

A company spokesman told just-auto that VW will continue to offer multiple petrol and diesel units in the Golf, with the electric version only developed as an extra.

The electric Golf was previewed by the Golf blue-e-motion concept presented back in May. The vehicle is powered by an electric motor that develops 85 kW (115 hp) and a torque of 270 Nm. The unit, which has been placed in the engine compartment, uses a lithium-ion battery pack that has a capacity of 26.5 kilowatt-hours.

The battery has a special architecture, as it is placed in the boot space (this still offers 237 liters for the luggage), under the rear seats and in the center tunnel. The battery’s heat is dissipated by a separate air cooling system.

The vehicle offers a driving range of 93 miles (150 km) per charge, while offering a top speed of 87 mph (140 km/h) and taking 11.8 seconds to complete the 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint.

The vehicle has been fitted with a “sailing” function: when the driver releases the acceleration pedal, the electric motor is disengaged from the drivetrain, allowing the car to travel with the minimum amount of drag. In addition to that, the car uses a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS).
