Long gone are the days of the large American luxury gas-thirsty road barges that were crowned the creme of motoring. Small, economical and versatile is what defines now a perfect car and this year it’s the Volkswagen Golf who made it in the top of the North American Car of the Year award.
Surprisingly or not, Volkswagen of America just announced that the 2015 Golf and 2015 Golf GTI hot hatch have been named the 2015 North American Car of the Year after being recognized for setting new benchmarks in their segments through innovation, design and available driver assistance features.

“Volkswagen is thrilled to start 2015 with the Golf and Golf GTI taking home the incredible North American Car of the Year title,” said Michael Horn, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “This award highlights our achievements and hard work in the past year, and we are confident that the Golf family will continue to pave the way for the brand in the year ahead.”

Currently, the Golf lineup is offered in four versions - you got the sporty Golf GTI that offers both lots of fun and takes the groceries home, the jumpy Golf 1.8T, the greener Golf TDI Clean Diesel and the greenest e-Golf powered by electricity alone.

Future plans will see the introduction of the unleashed 292 hp Golf R as well as the Golf SportWagen in both TDI Clean Diesel and turbocharged 1.8-liter TSI guises, all happening this spring according to Volkswagen.

Oh, by the way, this is VW’s second North American Car of the Year award, the first being the one for the Beetle model in 1999.
