Two days ago, we told you that Volkswagen started selling the new Passat in Japan with the 1.4-liter TSI turbo engine available across all three trim levels (plus the R-Line model). It seems diesels are a no-go in the land of the rising sun, as the Golf Alltrack is also Tokyo bound, but only with the 1.8 TSI turbo engine and standard all-wheel drive.
The first-ever Golf Alltrack model is available in Europe with four engines, the 1.8, plus three more diesels, ranging from 110 to 184 PS. We think all of them make more senses on this type of family car since the 1.8 TSI isn't exactly know for its fuel economy.

When the VW sub-brands were assigned specific jobs to do with the development of the MQB platform, it was SEAT's job to make the 1.8 TSI. The turbocharged engine produces 180 PS and has also been used to replace the 1.4 TSI on the Polo GTI, but is more commonly seen on the Leon.

In Japan, the Golf Alltrack arrives carrying a starting price of 3.47 million yen (€25,600). The official fuel consumption number of 14.7 km/l (6.8 l/100km) is unlikely to impress anybody, not in the land of the Prius. However, this model does come with raised suspension (25mm extra) and a masculine body kit. In addition to the new front and rear bumpers, you also get 17-inch wheels with an Alltrack-specific design and 205/55 R17 tires.

The 1.8 TSI model is the only version of the Alltrack to have exhaust pipes on either side. However, it would have looked good even without those, as aluminum mirror caps and roof rails draw attention.

Safety equipment includes the Pre-Crash Brake system, adaptive cruise control and standard 4Motion all-wheel drive with an added "off-road" mode.

With long winters and nasty weather, Japan is the perfect place for an off-road wagon. However, we can't help notice how Subaru seem to have that covered and even have their own small turbocharged engine.
