Volkswagen Fined $13.2 Million by Brazil’s Environmental Agency over Amarok Emissions

Both the U.S. and the European Union are currently running their investigations over Volkswagen’s emission cheat. Similar actions happen worldwide, as the light at the end of the tunnel still seems to be far, far away for the old continent’s biggest carmaker. While most of the countries affected by the emission cheat scandal still look for a way to handle the situation, it appears Brazil has decided to take action.

Local media reports today that Volkswagen Brazil was fined with the maximum allowed for this infraction according to the Environmental Crimes Law. The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) has decided to penalize the German carmaker with the equivalent of $13.2 million after it has found that the company has cheated about the emissions its Amarok trucks produced in the South American country.

“The company was notified on Thursday and is expected to submit a corrective plan for the altered vehicles that were sold so that they meet the emission standards required by Brazilian laws. The recall will be dedicated exclusively to the correction of the modified device and will not affect engine performance,” announced IBAMA in a statement, quoted by Economico Valor.

The Agency’s investigation started shortly after EPA’s discovery in September. On September 25, Volkswagen Brazil was notified by IBAMA and obliged to provide information about the models produced or sold in the country.

In a letter sent to IBAMA on October 22, the German carmaker said that all the 2011 Amarok vehicles and part of the 2012 models that had been sold in Brazil had the same problem found by American authorities. It would seem that the total amount of vehicles affected by the emission cheat device is 17,057 units. The Agency also stated that the defeat device found in the diesel trucks was not present in the gasoline engine models or the ones running with biofuel.
