Volkswagen E-Up Confirmed for 2013

Volkswagen E-Up will enter production in 2013 and will be based on the electric concept displayed at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2009. Ulrich Hackenberg, head of development department of Volkswagen, confirmed the information, according to a report published by autoweek.nl. Furthermore, the source notes that Volkswagen intends to market the E-Up as the electric version of the Lupo.

However, Volkswagen will consider the E-Up a niche product as the German brand is still considering that electric vehicles are only able to bring slight sales increases. At least until 2020 when the market is expected to rely more on electric powertrains and less on diesel or gasoline configurations.

The E-Up concept was powered by an electric unit and a 18 kWh lithium-ion battery. Dimensions of the E-Up! are 3.19 meters (length) x 1.64 meters (width) x 1.47 meters (height). Its wheelbase is 2.19 meters.

Other innovations, which have only slim chances to make it to production, include olar cells covering an area of 1.4 square meters (or 1.7 square meters if the driver chooses to fold down the sun visors, also equipped with solar cells). The solar roof has an innovative use as it supplies energy to the car's electrical system and, in case the car is parked, it powers the ventilation system.

As for performance figures, Volkswagen claimed the electric concept is able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds, while reaching 50 km/h in 3.5 seconds. The electric powertrain develops 80 horsepower.
