Volkswagen Discontinues Golf SportWagen, Golf Alltrack From U.S. Lineup

The Beetle is gone, now Volkswagen decided to make do without two variants of the Golf. The SportWagen and Alltrack will end production with the 2019 model year, and in their place, no fewer than three crossovers will be unveiled in the following 24 months.
First things first, the European-designed wagons will be succeeded by the Atlas Cross towards the end of 2019. Next up, the ID. Crozz will be unveiled in 2020 and the Tarek is scheduled to enter production in Mexico in 2021. Crossovers reign supreme, alright!

“SUVs have definitely assumed the mantle of family haulers from the station wagons and minivans we remember from our childhoods,” declared Scott Keogh, head honcho at Volkswagen of America, Inc. “But as we look towards the future, both our expanded SUV lineup and the upcoming ID. family of electric vehicles will bring the opportunity to combine the style and space people want in a variety of ways,” he said.

The increasing demand for such models is understandable, more so because a crossover bridges the gap between a passenger car such as the Golf SportWagen and a pickup truck. Like it or not, the crossover is the best of both worlds despite the fact they’re not as practical as a longroof family car nor as off-road capable as a workhorse.

It’s widely believed the Golf 8 will be sold as the GTI and R in the United States, relegating every other version of the compact hatchback to the United Kingdom and European Union. Going through the sales figures for lesser Golf variants in the U.S. reveals the problem’s extent.
Looking at the bigger picture, the redesigned Jetta is more than enough for Volkswagen in this segment. It’s better value and features more equipment than the SportWagen from the get-go, and a lot cheaper than the Alltrack. As a daily driver or rental, the Jetta is the better choice.

Prior to these models, Volkswagen was a stronghold of the longroof thanks to the 1600 Squareback Sedan (1966 to 1971), Type 412 Wagon (1971 to 1974), Dasher (1974 to 1981) and Quantum (1981 to 1988). The Fox, Passat, and Jetta followed suit, but nevertheless, 2019 is the final year of the Volkswagen wagon in the United States.
