Volkswagen Denies Interest in F1, NASCAR

Apparently, Volkswagen Group's potential involvement in Formula 1 is not going to happen. Despite several allegations that the German carmaker is considering a foray into the Great Circus as a result of the new turbo engine rules that will debut in the series in 2013, the brand's head of technical development Ulrich Hackenberg made things crystal clear earlier this week.

Nothing for us,” Hackenberg was quoted as saying to the Reuters news agency, when asked about a possible programme in the premier motor racing class of the FIA. “I should know what I am talking about, since it would come out of my budget.

In recent months, several officials from Red Bull Racing have hinted that a future collaboration with VW - engine and powertrain - would be evaluated, should the Germans want to get involved in F1 racing.

In addition, the German official also insisted that an involvement in the North American Stock Car Racing series (NASCAR) is also out of the question.

In the meantime however, Volkswagen is rumored to follow its immense success in the Dakar Rally with a brand new programme in the World Rally Championship. News about it has been surfacing in the media for quite some time, most of them hinting that VW has already set up a monster budget for a programme in 2012.

According to sources, no less than EUR 100 million have been put aside by the German brand for their WRC foray, although it's yet unclear what marque and car they will use for their return in the series. In addition, it's yet to be decided whether VW will keep their Dakar programme alive – an event which they won 3 consecutive times with their rally-spec Touareg – or focus entirely on their WRC entry.
