The first ever campervan designed by Volkswagen’s own Commercial Vehicles division, the Transporter-based California, is getting an update for the 2020 model year in an attempt to keep the name at the top of customer’s shopping list. Called 6.1, the refreshed van comes with enhanced interior and a wealth of improved safety, control and infotainment systems.
Volkswagen did not release the full details about the new California, and only made public one sketch of the van. But they are enough though to create a comprehensible picture of what’s to come in the coming months.

Set to be launched on the market at an unspecified date later this year, the new Cali brings the van into the digital world. The multifunctional camper control unit in the roof has been redesigned and digitalized, and there’s now a new generation of the infotainment system fitted inside.

Created as part of the carmaker’s digital cockpit, the system now supports online access via eSIM, and a wealth of undisclosed “digital instruments.”

For the comfort of the passengers, Volkswagen promises a redesigned interior, improved living and sleeping areas, but also a new look for the dashboard. This part of the car is now fitted with new analog or digital instruments, depending on the specification.

The safety of both the van and those inside is ensured using a variety of assistance systems, including lane assist, side protection, trailer assist, and a side-wind compensation system.

The California T6.1 will hit the market equipped with a single 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine capable of developing 199 PS.

This new variant of the campervan will make its debut at the Caravan-Salon in Düsseldorf in August. The California is one of the heavyweights of its segment. Last year, the British market alone needed 18,000 such vans to satisfy its needs, placing the model at the top of the pack.
