German automaker Volkswagen has celebrated the production of 10 million vehicles at its Volkswagen de Mexico assembly plant in Puebla, Mexico.
The 10 millionth VW-badged car, which rolled off the Puebla assembly line on August 13, was a Volkswagen Beetle GSR, a 1970s-inpired Beetle that’s scheduled to arrive in US dealerships this month.
The Puebla plant, now the largest automobile manufacturing facility in North America, started producing Volkswagen vehicles back in 1967 with the original Beetle. As we speak, the Mexican plant also builds Jetta and Jetta SportWagen models for the US market.
“This is an important milestone and symbol of Volkswagen’s long-term commitment to the North American market,” said Jonathan Browning, President of Volkswagen of America, Inc. “It’s only fitting that the milestone car is a Beetle in light of this being the 75th anniversary of the car. Puebla has been manufacturing quality Beetles and other Volkswagens for the United States for nearly 50 years, and continues to play a key role in our growth strategy.”
