Usually, when you think of beach buggies, mental imagery goes to cheap bodies, an old Beetle engine with plenty of chrome added and seats made by some guy you meat while surfing. Volkswagen is a German automaker, so it does not surprise us that they didn’t go that particular route with the little Buggy Up Concept that landed in Frankfurt.
The design study clearly pays homage to the original Bug-based model that roamed the beaches of California in the 60s, so it’s actually much more similar to the 2012 Beetle in looks than to the Up city car.

The concept beach craft has a lightweight chassis with extensive body reinforcements and a roll bar behind the two seats to compensate for the loss of the roof and the doors.

The interior is reportedly completely waterproof, but we don’t think they’ll be putting that to the test with an expensive concept. If the rain catches you by surprise and you don’t feel like getting wet, there’s also a soft top you can put over, which is supported by stiffening bars.

We don’t know if the model will indeed enter production, but it’s definitely mission a surfboard rack if it does. Although it's probabbly not rea-engined like the original and won't cross the 100 hp mark, it's still something worh building for VW.
