Right now the only engines US customers can go for in the new Beetle are the base 2.5-liter and the Turbo version with a 200 hp 2.0-liter. Both of these were introduced last year and will be joined by the first diesel engine in the new car, after the Beetle TDI makes its debut at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.
The most efficient Beetle on the American market will be powered by a 2.0-liter TDI engine rated at 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of peak torque, the same engine as in the Passat and Jetta TDI models. The good news is that the manual should return a Hyundai Elantra rivaling 29 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. It also meets emissions laws in all states, including California.

The Beetle TDI hasn’t received a base price yet, but we can tell you it comes with 17-inch wheels he kaeferfach secondary glovebox, Bluetooth, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with audio controls, keyless entry, iPod connectivity and powered windows.

Sales will start this summer as 2013MY cars!

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
