Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Concept to Debut in Beijing

Previous reports indicated that Volkswagen would debut the Beetle Convertible as early as this year’s Detroit Auto Show in January. The focus then shifted to New York this month and now the car has been earmarked for an early 2013 market launch.

The car is basically ready now, but with so much time before it hits, VW really didn’t need to show it and spoil the anticipation.

But a concept version of Beetle Convertible will launch at the Beijing Auto Show in China later this month, giving us a preview of what’s to come early next year. This will be based on the E-Bugster concept we’re showing you here, so expect exaggerated lines and not production-intent bodywork.

When the Convertible reaches the US market, it’s expected to come with the same engines, including a 2.5-liter base unit, a 2.0 TFSI turbo and even the diesel 2.0! Manuals will be standard, as the six-speed dual-clutch unit will be an optional extra.
