Volkswagen UK has just introduced a third trim level for the Arteon premium four-door coupe. It's called the SE, like many similar equipment levels, and means you can have this supposedly attractive machine from £33,085.
We find their decision strange since it adds complication to a low-volume model. And VOlkswagen even said it wants to limit the number of configurations it sells. You can still buy the Arteon Elegance or R-Line for £35,075 and £35,885, respectively. If we remember correctly, these used to be about £3,000 more expensive when the Arteon was brand new.
But the R-Line package is the whole point of the Arteon, bringing those large air intakes with black trim and a mean stance. It's just bland, like a normal sedan. But let's look at what you're getting for the money. 18-inch Almere alloys, full-LED lights, adaptive cruise control with Front Assist, Discover Navigation system with 8-inch touchscreen display, two USB ports, three-zone climate control system and all-round parking sensors are all part of your deal.
What's missing compared to the next trim up are Nappa leather for the seats, adaptive lights, and Wireless Car-Net. The only engine available on the Arteon SE is the 2.0 TSI making 190 HP, which goes to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG. It returns 44.1 mpg UK (6.4 l/100km) combined and emits 144 grams of CO2. Within a year, it will also have the 150 HP diesel for similar money.
Options include metallic paint and Vienna leather. Unfortunately, the brilliant gold color that makes this car stand out isn't available. Digital dash? Can't have that either. But you can order the smoking package, which goes well with the 90's style analog clock.
The 2020 Arteon hets two other updates, namely the MIB3 9.2-inch infotainment and a supposedly all-new 2.0 TDI with cylinder deactivation, both share with the updated Passat.
