Volkswagen will introduce a high-performance diesel engine and a 10-speed dual clutch transmission, the German automaker announced on Friday.
Speaking at the 34th International Vienna Motor Symposium, Volkswagen's CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn revealed that the Wolfsburg-based company is developing a high-performance diesel engine which will be capable of delivering 134 HP per liter. In addition, the mill will be fitted with a high-pressure fuel-injection system at up to 3,000 bar and an optimized variable valve train, among other technologies.
Winterkorn also announced that the new 10-speed dual clutch transmission will have an "extremely wide gear-ratio spread" and will offer improved fuel efficiency by allowing the engine to work at reduced RPM range. By the time of its release, the new gearbox will reportedly place Volkswagen at the top of transmission technology.
As far as plug-in hybrid technology is concerned, the automaker stated that the Audi A3 e-tron and the Porsche Panamera are about to go intro full production, adding that they will be followed by other models, such as Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Passat, Audi A6 and Porsche Cayenne.
